The Gayatri Mantra is

OM, we meditate on the glory of that Being who produces this universe, may It enlighten our minds.

Origin, benefits and chanting of the Gayatri Mantra

It is said that Gayatri Devi gave the “Gayatri Mantra” to mankind. It is also sometimes referred to as the “Guru Mantra” or the “Savitri Mantra”. It is one of the oldest mantras, and considered to be among the highest and most powerful mantras. It is therefore referred to as “the Mother of the Vedas”.

Rishis chose the words of the Gayatri Mantra carefully and so arranged them that they convey meaning but also create the specific power of righteous wisdom. The best times to chant the Gayatri Mantra are at dawn, mid-day, and dusk. For maximum benefit it is recommended to chant it 108 times, but if time is short then you can chant it 3, 9, or 18 times. The syllables are claimed to have a positive effect on all the chakras in the body – thus, correct pronunciation and enunciation are important.

It is also said that chanting the Gayatri Mantra removes all obstacles to increased wisdom and understanding and that righteous wisdom emerges soon after the Gayatri Mantra has been recited.

Bear in mind also that ‘I’ is the subject, it is not an object of perception. It is recommended that you refrain from considering yourself to be an object of perception and understand that you are the subject ‘I’ that perceives itself, it does not need another subject to perceive it.

Similarly, I am wondering whether you have a good explanation for the longer version of the gayatri mantra.
